How to pick a stylist in Hong Kong without getting burned

The scariest part of beauty in Hong Kong: the ad photo looks amazing, the result looks nothing like it. HKStylist runs zero ads — real work, real reviews. Here's how to check for yourself, so you pick the right stylist without relying on luck.

No ads · Real work · Real reviews
01

Spotting fakes — the basics

How do I tell real reviews from fake ones?

Be wary of these phrases — they're usually ad reviews.

  • "The owner is so nice": praises the person, not the skill.
  • "Way cheaper than the market": unreasonably cheap usually hides a catch.
  • "Just added me on IG": a common tail of sponsored reviews.
  • All five-star, posted the same day, similar wording: usually planted.

Real reviews mention specifics: which service, what improved, whether there was a hard sell. Every review on HKStylist is verified and written by real clients — we don't take money for ranking.

Why does the ad photo look so different from the real result?

Because ads use three tricks — cherry-picking (the single best shot), filters (smoothing + brightening), and lighting (angled light that fakes texture). When you look, find: un-filtered close-ups, natural light, and before/after on different clients. Don't judge by the hero shot alone.

Why shouldn't I pick a stylist from IG ads alone?

IG ads are pay-to-show — whoever pays the most shows up, which says nothing about skill. What you see isn't the best fit for you, it's the one with the biggest budget. HKStylist works the opposite way: zero ads, zero sponsored ranking — you browse real work and real reviews and choose for yourself, not by who paid.

Choosing a stylist, in practice

What signals should I check in a stylist's portfolio?

Five signals:

  1. At least ten samples of the same service (not just two or three pretty shots).
  2. Different types of clients (different hair / skin / nail shapes), not only the easiest cases.
  3. Before / after in pairs, ideally with dates.
  4. Close-ups where you can see texture, finish and roots.
  5. A signature — a stylist who specializes in one thing usually does it most reliably.

How do I pick the right stylist for me?

Don't just look for pretty — look for cases that look like you. Pick samples from clients with hair / skin / a look closest to yours. On HKStylist you can filter by service and area, go through each stylist's real work and verified reviews, and pick the one that matches you best. The choice is yours.

First time getting lashes / brows tattooed / hair coloured — what should I watch for?

  • Always see the healed result (after it settles / fades), not just the just-finished shot.
  • Ask which brand they use and the touch-up / redo policy.
  • Check they can work with your base (your eye shape, your natural hair colour), not just the most dramatic case.
03

Prices & services

How much does hair colour usually cost in Hong Kong?

It mainly depends on the service: a single colour / root touch-up is cheapest; bleaching, balayage and highlights cost more because of the bleach and product; long hair adds more. Always ask: is it all-inclusive, or are bleach, colour and treatment charged separately? A lot of "cheap" prices simply don't include bleaching. On HKStylist every stylist lists their service prices, so you don't have to guess.

What is bleach-free colour? Is it right for me?

Bleach-free colour is a shade you can get without lifting the hair — far less damage and easy to maintain, but the range skews warm and dark. It covers greys but can't reach very light shades like milk-tea blonde. For very light colours you need bleach.

What's the difference between balayage, ombré and highlights?

Balayage is a hand-painted, natural gradient; ombré is a dark-to-light section; highlights are individual strands. All three are bleach-based, with different prices and upkeep.

Using HKStylist

How does HKStylist help me find a stylist?

Simple: filter by service (hair / nails / lashes / brows / facial / tattoo) and area → go through each stylist's real work and verified reviews → book directly once you've found the right fit. All with zero ads and no paying for ranking — the order you see is based only on real work and real reviews.

Why doesn't HKStylist take ad money?

Because the moment we do, ranking becomes "whoever pays goes first" — and that's exactly the trap we're trying to fix. So it's a hard rule: zero ads, zero sponsored ranking. We won't let ads dupe you.
